Originally from South Africa, I am currently based in Los Angeles, California.
I am a qualified Attorney with over twelve years of legal experience and hold a Master's Degree in Animal Law.
I studied my B.COM and LL.B Degrees at the University of Johannesburg. I then practiced Corporate and Commercial Law for nearly seven years in South Africa, working on a number of key matters for large clients - including domestic and cross border projects and transactions. I have worked at Africa's largest law firm, ENS Africa, as well as international law firm, Hogan Lovells.
In 2017, I formally co-established the first Animal Law non-profit in South Africa (informally established in 2014), of which I am currently a Director, and continue to work on a number of animal law issues in South Africa.
Later in 2017, I moved to the USA to undertake my Masters in Animal Law at Lewis & Clark Law School, where I decided to fully dedicate my time and skill to Animal Law. During my time at Lewis & Clark, I worked both for the Center for Animal Law Studies as a Research Assistant, as well as interned for the Animal Legal Defense Fund.
Upon graduation, I worked with World Animal Protection and Animal Equality on a consultancy basis, and with the Center for Animal Law Studies. I then joined CALS on a fulltime basis as the Aquatic Animal Law Initiative Fellow and assisted with the Animal Law Clinic. After completing my fellowship with CALS, I took on a Fellowship at UCLA School of Law's Animal Law and Policy Program.
I worked at UCLA for six months before taking over Animal Law Reform South Africa as the Executive Director where I am currently leading the organisation.
I am a Lecturer and Research Associate with the University of Johannesburg and recently co-taught the first Animal Law Course in South Africa and Africa with Professor David Bilchitz. In December 2021, I joined the United Nations in Harmony with Nature Programme as an Independent Expert for South Africa. I am a founding member of the Global Alliance for the Rights of Nature Africa Hub and interim Governance Facilitator for the Hub.
I also volunteer with a number of other organizations - working on a broad range of issues, both in South Africa, Africa and the USA. In South Africa, I have leadership roles with the Coalition of African Animal Welfare Organisations and I am a former trustee of the Humane Education Trust. Throughout Africa, I work with Lawyers for Animal Protection in Africa (LAPA).
I am passionate about animals, human rights, social justice, the environment, the law, research and education. I hope to utilize my knowledge to achieve change and ensure protection for vulnerable beings. I further hope to assist with the establishment of animal law as a legitimate field in South Africa.
I have a broad range of skills and expertise and enjoy working with diverse stakeholders and a broad variety of matters.
I am also interested in technology, artificial intelligence, life beyond Earth, space, science fiction and pushing traditional boundaries.
